ELearning-Driven Implementation Training a Success with Unexpected Benefits
When Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, Ohio, decided to upgrade to MEDITECH WebAcute, they knew they were looking for a training implementation approach that would minimize costs while maximizing learning outcomes.
“We didn’t have enough staff to provide in-person training and support at all sites,” said Barb Bowers, IT Applications Manager at the hospital.
Mary Rutan Hospital chose Sedona Learning Solutions as their partner in creating eLearning tutorials for their physicians (inpatient, ED, and ambulatory), schedulers, ambulatory nurses, and financial staff. These eLearning tutorials were used as the primary training tool, with voluntary drop-in sessions available for those that wanted additional dialogue and practice. This greatly reduced the need for some of the more expensive aspects of classroom-heavy training: consultant support, classroom space, and clinician time.
Using this approach, 75% of the hospital’s physicians felt well-prepared to begin go-live with only the eLearning tutorial instruction. The optional drop-in sessions for physicians were well attended with 37% of overall physicians attending.
“The implementation training approach exceeded our expectations,” said Barb. “The tutorials could be taken by all our staff no matter where they were, which was particularly helpful with ambulatory. We also anticipated where a little more go-live support would be needed, and we planned accordingly for that.”
What wasn’t planned for was that their approach would be more than just cost-effective—it would also maximize the safety of their staff during a time of crisis. The hospital went from go-live to grappling with COVID-19. But with eLearning tutorials already on hand, the hospital was prepared for the newly urgent need to train staff virtually.
